About & legal
What this is
Play the Classics is a small museum with the “do not touch” signs removed. Every game in the library runs right in your browser — no downloads to install, no accounts, no ads — and every game here is one we’re allowed to share.
The site wears a new outfit every day: fifteen hand-built skins rotate at midnight your time, from Arcade Night to VHS Rental Store. Don’t like today’s? Pin your favorite with the 🎨 Skin picker up top — your pick stays until you switch back to the daily rotation.
Our sourcing discipline
Old games are not automatically free games, and “abandonware” is not a legal category. So the library is stocked only from sources with a clear right to distribute:
- Public-domain and homebrew releases — games written by hobbyists and given away, archived at places like PDROMS.
- Publisher freeware releases — classics their owners formally set free, like Bethesda’s release of The Elder Scrolls: Arena and Jason Emery’s release of Tyrian.
- Shareware episodes — the try-before-you-buy chapters publishers always intended to be copied and passed around.
- Licensed homebrew — modern games for old systems, hosted with the author’s blessing.
Every entry shows where its file came from and the basis on which it’s distributed — check the “Source” and “License” lines on any play page. If a game’s rights are ever unclear, it doesn’t go up; if we got one wrong, write to us and it comes down.
Bring your own game
The Play Your Own player hosts only the emulator. Files you load there are read by your own browser, on your own machine, and are never uploaded or stored. Please only use files you have the right to play.
Trademarks & credit
System names (NES, Sega Genesis, DOS, and the rest) are trademarks of their respective owners; this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by them. Games remain the property of their creators and publishers, and are shared here strictly within the terms under which they were released. Emulation is provided by the open-source EmulatorJS and js-dos projects. Cover tiles without original artwork are our own generated placeholders.
